University of Murcia researchers present research on artificial intelligence for forest monitoring at AVSS 2026

Researcher Adrián Cánovas Rodríguez, together with Guillermo Carmona-Martínez, Aurora González-Vidal and Antonio Skarmeta, participated in AVSS 2026, held in Lecce, Italy, as part of the AI4Nature session, focused on the application of artificial intelligence and computer vision to environmental monitoring and biodiversity.
During the conference, they presented the paper Impact of Manual Annotation Refinement on Instance Segmentation Accuracy in UAV-LiDAR-Based Forest Inventories, which explores how artificial intelligence and drone-based LiDAR data can be combined to identify individual trees and support the analysis of forest ecosystems.
The research addresses one of the challenges of these technologies: enabling artificial intelligence systems to process large amounts of forest data without relying heavily on manual annotation, which can be time-consuming and resource-intensive. The study evaluates different deep learning models and strategies that combine automated processing with limited human refinement, contributing to the development of more efficient and scalable tools for forest monitoring.
